It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Paneer Selvan, life member of the Association of Indian Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians. His passing leaves an irreparable void in our community.
Dr. N.Panneerselvam, a distinguished alumnus of the prestigious Madras Veterinary College, where he earned his MVSc degree, led a remarkable life dedicated to animal care and welfare. His illustrious career spanned multiple roles and institutions, leaving an indelible mark on the world of veterinary science.
Initially, Dr. Panneerselvam served in the Tamil Nadu State Animal Husbandry department, where he honed his skills and expertise in animal health and management. His exceptional talent and dedication soon earned him a deputation to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, where he worked at the renowned Arignar Anna Zoological Park for nearly four years. His subsequent move to the Delhi Zoological Park marked a significant milestone in his career. As Joint Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Panneerselvam played a pivotal role in shaping the zoo’s animal care and management practices. His leadership, expertise, and passion for animal welfare inspired countless colleagues and contributed significantly to the zoo’s success. Even after his retirement, Dr. Panneerselvam continued to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with others. His book, “Koondukku Veliye” (Tamil), offers a fascinating glimpse into his zoo life, providing valuable insights and anecdotes from his remarkable career.
Throughout his life, Dr. Panneerselvam remained committed to his work and his community. His decision to remain unmarried allowed him to devote himself fully to his profession and philanthropic pursuits. After retirement, he returned to his hometown of Madurai, where he continued to share his expertise and experience with others. Dr. Panneerselvam’s remarkable life serves as a testament to his dedication, passion, and commitment to animal welfare and veterinary science. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of veterinarians, animal care professionals, and conservationists.
